Over two million residents of Chile’s capital city of Santiago have been left without drinking water after landslides polluted the Maipo river.
The additional silt in the water has forced the close of water processing plants that provide water to 1/3 of the city. The government hopes to have the plants back on line by tomorrow. Many businesses in the city had to close because of the water shortage.
Officials have been providing some of the nearly 600,000 families without water emergency supplies from tanker trucks.
The summer heat compounds the problem. Temperatures in the city rose above 85 degrees Tuesday.
