Landslide Kills 11 in Peru

Officials say 11 people are dead and another 10 missing after a landslide in northern Peru.

More than a dozen homes were destroyed when flooding caused an avalanche of mud and rocks to sweep into the village of El Porvenir.

“At least five children are among the dead,” provincial mayor Ronald Garcia said. In addition Garcia said entire families are missing.

Heavy rains in the area have triggered several landslides during the last few weeks.

“It’s a jungle area,” Alfredo Murgueytio, head of the National Civil Defense Institute told Peruvian radio. “Houses were on the edge of this ravine and the flood swept through those that were there.”

Officials said most of the residents are coffee farmers.
